Medicare event propels people into this important time of year
More than 150 people attended Carle’s inaugural event “Wellness, Fun and Medicare 101” to learn about Health Alliance Medicare Advantage plans and the Annual Enrollment Period (AEP), which starts Monday.
For at least one participant, the event will have a lasting impact. Champaign’s Maria Goncalo made an appointment to learn more about Medicare Advantage coverage from Health Alliance’s Sally Ludwig. On a Medicare Supplement plan now, Goncalo said, “Sally was very helpful and provided a lot of information so I can make an informed decision about my insurance coverage for 2019.”
While seeing and enjoying lunch at the administration building at Carle at The Fields was part of the draw, the event’s main attractions were the speakers and the community resources.
- Diane Genthner, Health Alliance, "Care Coordination, What’s In It for Members?"
- Pat Babich-Smith, Family Service of Champaign County, "Local Resources and Help Paying for Things Medicare Does Not Cover."
- Nasreen Syed, MD, Adult Medicine, Champaign on Curtis, "Primary Care Doctors Working With and For You, and What About Medicare Advantage?"
As per the season, Dr. Syed relied on some sports terms to engage and educate.
“Think of your PCP as your quarterback. He or she helps direct your care and ensures seamless handoffs to specialists and care coordinators,” she said. “And it all works best when providers like Carle and health plans like Health Alliance are working from the same playbook.”
Her message resonated.
“The event was great because it reached to a segment of the community that, because of age, could be in need of medical attention more often than the community at large,” Goncalo said.
Event participants also took the short walk across Fields Drive South to see Health Alliance Connections, 3301 Fields Drive South #105, the new facility that serves as a resource and gathering place for Health Alliance Medicare and individual plan members and prospective members.

“To say we’re excited about Health Alliance Connections would be an understatement,” said Terra Mullins, Health Alliance community outreach manager. “It’s exciting to have a new facility to replace the location near Alexander’s Steakhouse. We’ll still offer the same great customer service and guidance.
“Plus we’re looking forward to early next year when we’ll share expanded offerings like cooking classes and other events designed for both wellness and making connections, just like the name says.”
