Cancer Survivors Recover and Thrive Together

Cancer survivors can expect to be inspired and have questions answered virtually from the comfort of their homes during the annual Carle Cancer Survivor Retreat.

Recover and Thrive: Living Well Beyond Cancer,  will be held online, Oct. 3 from 8 a.m. to noon. The event is free and open to all cancer survivors and their families regardless of where they receive treatment.

Register at carle.org/SurvivorsRetreat or call (217) 383-6846. Registered attendees will receive a login to connect on Oct. 3.

“This is a chance every year for connectivity,” said Faith Roberts, a nurse for more than 40 years and executive director of community engagement at Carle who is giving the keynote presentation entitled, “Life Done Right.”
During the retreat survivors have an opportunity to validate their stories and hear from others, said Roberts, whose gift of powerful storytelling captivates her audience.

“Cancer cuts to the core. All of a sudden people look at you differently. Life done right is saying this is who I am but I won’t let it define me,” said Roberts, who has spoken at Mayo Clinic and given more than 2,800 state, national and international presentations.

Event organizer and host Maria Grosse Perdekamp, MD, an oncologist and hematologist at Carle Cancer Center said, “After cancer treatment, patients often feel a bit lost, often dealing with fatigue, depression, neuropathy or perhaps job loss,” The retreat is a way to provide support with what they are experiencing physically and emotionally.”
